DESIGNED FOR DIFFERENCES

MADE FOR THE BEST POSSIBLE FIT
At Conscious Clothing, we've never done anything the "usual" way. When brands were investing in fast fashion, we stayed slow. When synthetics were cheaper and easier, we stuck to sustainable fabrics.
NOW, AT A TIME WHEN RETAILERS ARE PULLING BACK ON PLUS SIZES, WE'RE INVESTING IN OURS.
We've never been one to adhere to the standard — because we believe there is no "standard" when it comes to our bodies. It's our differences that make us better. So that's exactly what we're designing for.

what's changing?
After over a year of development, we're beginning to roll out our "Fit Conscious" initiative slowly and intentionally — because we want to make sure we get it right. Eventually, our entire catalogue will be Fit Conscious, but for now, look for the badge on our newest collection and pay close attention to our updated, more consistent sizing.

rewriting the sizing "STANDARD"
When it comes to garment sizing, we're all forced into a made-up system that's different for every brand. Sizing charts shift, labels change, and numbers on tags don't mean the same thing everywhere. That's why we've invested in creating consistency across our garments.
OUR GOAL WITH THIS INITIATIVE IS TO CREATE:
CONSISTENCY
Ensure consistent sizing across all our products
fabric savings
Build in even more sustainable measures to our patterns.
better fitS
Create better fitting garments in more sizes, prioritizing Curvy.
perfecting our pattern making
When creating a pattern larger than an XL, most brands simply enlarge a smaller pattern. The problem wit that is the human body has curves (that are rarely uniform), so body proportions don't always scale up linearly. Larger bodies need a separate set of patterns to accommodate these differences.
Over the past year, our small team has done massive amounts of research on what works and what doesn't for our Curvy (sizes 1 – 6) garments and the folks who wear them, including the following:
• Separate patterns and dress forms for size ranges
• Utilizing Sewsie, our size 6 dress form with curves
• Fit and wear testing by real people
• Adding darts and larger pockets
• Reinforcing seams
• Reconsidering length
• Lots of little details, like slight curving and shaping

BETTER CURVY SIZING & SIZE CONSISTENCY
It's not just Curvy sizes that are getting and upgrade; we're improving our Straight sizes, too — ensuring all our customers have a consistent shopping experience from garment to garment. If you're a Conscious Clothing customer, our Fit Conscious initiative is for you.
what is "curvy" and "straight" sizing?
We are using this language throughout our "Fit Conscious" initiative, and if you're wondering what it means...
Straight sizing refers to clothing sizes (often 00-12) that are designed for a body with a less pronounced difference between the waist and hip measurements. Conscious Clothing Straight sizes run from XXS-XL.
Curvy sizing, in contrast, is a fit category that accommodates body shapes with a more significant waist-to-hip differential, providing more room in the hips and thighs while often having a narrower waistband to prevent gapping. Conscious Clothing Curvy sizes are 1 – 6, the "6" measuring at a traditional 4X.

how to take your measurements
Your measurements are nothing more than numbers: neutral, factual, and empowering. Knowing them means you can shop smarter, save shipping waste, and choose clothes that fit and feel good.
Our product listings include body, garment and model measurements, so you can get a frame of reference for how the item will fit you. You'll notice that some garment measurements, especially in woven linen and cotton, are large than the model's measurements. This is because most garments need ease (extra fabric) to get it on and off and let the item skim against your body instead of being skintight.

our unique curvy dress form
meet sewsie
Created with similar measurements of our model, Francie, Sewsie is a size 6 dress form that kicked off our need to standardize universally across our entire product line. Using the fit of her curves, we were able to start regrading our patterns. And now, she's the standard for us!
But what's a dress form? A dress form is a 3D model used to fit and display clothing, helping our designers and sewists visualize how a garment will look and fit on a human body, rather than having to fit it directly on a person. They are valuable for draping fabric, making adjustments and alterations, and for styling and displaying finished garments or prototypes.

need something custom?
Because we make most things to order or in small batches, we can do that! We already offer many things in custom options, like a 26", 28", and 30" inseam for example. Or the Ranch Jumpsuit in cropped, short, and tall. But if your body requires something else for the best fit, we're happy to put in a custom waistband or shorten a piece if requested. All you have to do is ask!

sustainability for all
at our heart
When Rose, the originator of Conscious Clothing, created this brand, she held the mission of sustainability at its core in every facet. We truly believe we couldn’t live up to this without creating sizing consistency for our wearers, because sustainability should include everyone. We could never be satisfied for the long haul with the fit of our garments unless they work, and work well, for all bodies.
As we roll out these changes, please remember that we’re a small, slow fashion brand — just 10 creatives designing, cutting, sewing, snapping, and shipping everything from our studio in Michigan.
