Sustainability and family values are the reasons why Conscious Clothing exists.
Over 15 years ago, owner and designer, Rose Phillips, noticed a void in the market and began sewing organic cloth diapers, diaper covers and clothes for her three young kids. She sold her creations in local West Michigan markets and moms quickly began inquiring about Conscious Clothing adding women’s apparel to the assortment. Rose again followed market demand and launched her Etsy shop in 2006. Together with her husband, Doug Phillips, they have grown the company in to a thriving small business.
Today, Conscious Clothing designs and makes women’s apparel and accessories, using only ethically sourced, sustainable materials. Our production, shipping and storage warehouse is in our studio in Belmont, Michigan. Sustainability and family remain our cornerstone values.
We thoughtfully designed our studio to function for our business: an inviting, light-filled space to enjoy the changing Michigan seasons while we create your garments. We proudly did much of the work ourselves and used reclaimed materials we had salvaged over the years: windows from a gas station that had been torn down, countertops and doors from a friend’s home they no longer needed, and salvaged sinks for the kitchenette and bathroom and metal cabinets from an old doctors office.
We believe in careful consumption. We value thoughtful design and strive to create timeless and modern silhouettes using quality, sustainable, long-lasting materials that can grow with our customer from season to season, as their style evolves. Creating capsule wardrobe pieces and minimalism in design remain the cornerstone of each collection as we strive to create functional clothing that works together season after season.
MEET OUR TEAM:
The founding mother- she makes the wheels turn on this Conscious Clothing machine. A knack for design and popcorn eating, she can be found laughing and hanging with her kids, doing yoga, dyeing fabric, or dancing around the cutting table.
Smart as a whip and a force behind the sewing machine, Maeve is great for an intelligent conversation at any point in the day. A model by trade, she listens to death metal and has a dual degree in philosophy & Japanese.
The strong and calm force behind all of our pattern-making, Karen’s attention to detail and fit skills bring our designs to life! Displaced by Hurricane Katrina, Karen and her family moved from New Orleans to a farm in Michigan where they raise horses, sheep, geese, and goats.
The man for whatever life throws at us- deliveries, snapping, snipping and fixing. Not only does he sew, he is the business brain of Conscious Clothing and has numerous skills & hobbies including guitar building, glass blowing, wood working, building antique motorcycles, and raising kids.
A textile artist who specializes in hand dyeing silk and other fibers, Liz is a veteran seamstress here at Conscious Clothing. With a major in Art and a minor in History, she brings skills and smarts to the team. Liz taught commercial sewing before working for us.
When she's not selling Conscious Clothing, she's filling her own closet with it. Good for providing color commentary, and bringing countless beverages to work.
